I didn't install ad-blockers, I just simply ignored all ads completely.

So how do you get my attention?

I'll tell you how: Pay me. Reward me for viewing an ad.

Imagine if, for example, The Boston Globe's website rewarded you a "GlobeBuck" (which would be worth a penny) for every three ads you clicked on. For every three video ads you watched, you'd get another GlobeBuck. After a while, those GlobeBucks would add up, and then you could cash them in for a free Dunkin' Donuts coffee or maybe a gift card of some sort. If there were rewards program like that, I bet a lot more people would engage with the ads on the Globe's website. It would be good for the advertisers (more people would pay attention to their ads), and good for the reader (they get free stuff).

Of course, this pay-to-click phenomenon is nothing new....Bing gets people to use their search engine this way, and Swagbucks gets people to take surveys and watch countless ads in exchange for free stuff. But I'm surprised that this strategy has not been employed by a media company. (If it has, I'm not aware of it...please tell me if you've heard of any in the comments below.)

My colleague Hiawatha Bray just wrote a wonderful article today about two new web browsers. One of them is called Brave, and it promises to pay its users virtual currency (i.e. bitcoin) to view ads.

Why can't newspapers do this?

The panel was called "Investigative Reporting 2.0" and the all-star lineup of journalists included Pulitzer-prize winner Dan Golden, Beth Daley from the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, Phillip Martin of WGBH-FM, and Mike Beaudet of FOX 25 News. They all provided some great advice and tips on pursuing investigative stories.

Mike Beaudet spoke about filing requests regularly for public records. Phillip Martin stressed the importance of talking to all different people, not just community leaders and the usual talking heads.

And when evaluating the strength of a potential investigative project, Dan Golden says: "The worse the problem, the better the story."

Online Tools

Beth Daley shared some of her favorite online tools, such as BatchGeo (to make interactive maps), Cometdocs (to convert PDF files to Excel), and Facesaerch (to find pictures of people).

Beth also mentioned one of my personal favorites -- the Wayback Machine. If you've never tried it, you should really check it out. It's a wonderful resource. It basically lets you browse through archived pages of the web. Want to see what a company’s website contained years ago? Enter the URL into the Wayback Machine and you can browse through its various incarnations and see how it's changed over the years. You can also learn who worked there, what the company's plans were at the time, what their old logo looked like, and so forth.

Beth also suggested using timelines to help tell your story. I found two sites on the web where you can create your own interactive timelines: the Knight Lab's timeline maker and Dipity.

Investigating Nonprofits
When it comes to investigating nonprofits, Form 990s can provide a treasure trove of information on how much the organization makes and how much its executives are paid. Look for 990s online at the Foundation Center, GuideStar, and the National Center for Charitable Statistics.

Investigating Public Companies
In addition to looking at SEC filings, find analysts who are advising to sell the stock, chances are they are skeptical of the company’s performance. Talk to the company's competitors.

Investigating Colleges and Universities

One person in the audience told the panel how she attended a private college, and wanted to find out the salary of the college president. Dan Golden recommended checking out the Chronicle of Higher Education, which publishes a survey of president salaries every year. Dan said there are other ways to glean information about a college's finances, too. If the college is borrowing money to say, construct new buildings on campus, try to get a hold of the bond issue prospectus. Check with Moody’s to get the college's bond rating and other details. Lawsuit depositions can also contain juicy information. Colleges get sued all the time, and if the college president is called to testify, he/she might have been asked some really good questions (i.e. what is your salary?) and their answers could be illuminating.

Lots of other stuff happened, too...some good, some not so good.....a resolution to revive the Helen Thomas lifetime achievement award was defeated..... and the national SPJ board (unfortunately) decided to raise dues next year, and there's nothing we can do about it. (So starting in January, professional membership dues will go from $72 to $75 per year; annual dues for students will be $37.50). The Connecticut chapter put forth a resolution to nix this dues increase, but alas, we couldn't round up enough supporting votes to get it through. To find out more on how the voting went, and other news and highlights from the conference, click here.

In other news....there are plenty of cool events coming up for local media folks in the Boston area. The Online News Association is launching a Boston chapter. To get involved, you can sign up to their Meetup group.

Here's what else I have on my calendar:

Oct. 17, 2011
Literary Firsts Reading series
*featuring SPJ's own Danielle Dreilinger*
WHEN: Monday, October 17 at 7pm
WHERE: Middlesex Lounge, 315 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge (Central Square)
COST: Free

Oct. 20, 2011
Social Media Workshop
*presented by the New England SPJ chapter*
featuring Jeff Cutler + Kara Sassone
WHEN: Thursday, October 20 at 6:30-8:30pm
WHERE: The Boston Globe, 135 Morrissey Blvd., Boston
RSVP: http://oct20socialmedia.eventbrite.com/

Oct. 20, 2011
Media Chowder Cocktail Party
WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 20, 6:30-9:30pm
WHERE: Sydney's Bar & Grille, Cambridge
COST: Free

Oct. 29, 2011
Bloodfeast Halloween Party
*Benefits the New England SPJ journalism scholarship fund*
WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 29, 10pm-2am
WHERE: Machine nightclub, 1254 Boylston St. Boston
COST: $15

Nov. 1, 2011
Visit GlobeLab: The Boston Globe's take on the (near) future of news
Open house event presented by Hacks/Hackers Boston
WHEN: Tuesday, November 1, 2011, 7:00 PM
WHERE: The Boston Globe, 135 Morrissey Blvd.
RSVP: http://bit.ly/qDqpBP

Tuesday, November 1
"Out of Line:The Art of Editorial Cartooning."
Speaker Series with Boston Globe cartoonist Dan Wasserman
12 p.m. @ Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center, Taubman 275

Thursday, November 3
Screening of Page One: Inside The New York Times.

Followed by Q & A with director Andrew Rossi and writer Kate Novack.
Moderated by Shorenstein Center director (*and SPJ member!*) Alex S.
