I'm back from the SPJ convention in New Orleans.
I'm happy to report that SPJ's "one member, one vote" proposal was approved, and John Ensslin took the helm as the new national SPJ president. Lots of other stuff happened, too...some good, some not so good.....a resolution to revive the Helen Thomas lifetime achievement award was defeated..... and the national SPJ board (unfortunately) decided to raise dues next year, and there's nothing we can do about it. (So starting in January, professional membership dues will go from $72 to $75 per year; annual dues for students will be $37.50). The Connecticut chapter put forth a resolution to nix this dues increase, but alas, we couldn't round up enough supporting votes to get it through. To find out more on how the voting went, and other news and highlights from the conference, click here.
In other news....there are plenty of cool events coming up for local media folks in the Boston area. The Online News Association is launching a Boston chapter. To get involved, you can sign up to their Meetup group.
